Matching Interlining Weight With Garment Fabric

Matching interlining weight to the outer fabric is an important part of achieving a balanced placket. If the reinforcement is significantly heavier than the garment material, the finished strip may become noticeably stiff. If it is too light, it may provide insufficient support around buttonholes and folded edges. The goal is to create stability without overpowering the original fabric.

Non woven fusible interlining offers a practical way to reinforce these garment areas because its adhesive coating allows it to bond directly to the fabric. Heat and pressure activate the coating, creating a fused layer on the wrong side. The interlining can therefore contribute support without changing the visible construction of the placket.

GSM is useful when comparing non woven interlining fabric, but it should not be viewed in isolation. The outer fabric's weight, weave or construction, intended garment style and desired hand-feel all influence the appropriate choice. A lightweight shirt and a heavier kurta may both require placket reinforcement, yet they may not perform best with the same interlining specification.

For this reason, sampling is particularly important for buyers placing bulk orders. Cut a small piece of the actual production fabric and apply the proposed interlining under the intended fusing conditions. Look at how the fused piece bends, whether the adhesive spreads evenly and whether the surface remains smooth. The finished sample should also feel appropriate when handled and folded.

If a manufacturer regularly produces different garment qualities, it can be useful to maintain separate interlining specifications for each fabric group. This avoids relying on a single grade simply for convenience. It also makes future purchasing more predictable because the buyer has an established reference for each application.

Interlining selection is ultimately a matching exercise. GSM provides a useful starting point, but actual fabric behaviour provides the stronger indication of whether a particular grade works. Testing before bulk production can help manufacturers find that balance between support, flexibility and appearance.
